Splash Pads are one of our favorite summertime activities because most are FREE, some have playgrounds, bathrooms or snack bars & shops nearby. Just BYO lunch, towels & sunscreen and the kids will have an hour or two of a splashing good time. ☀️💦

(photos via Yelp, I can't find any of the splash park area, I'll update when I get some)

I can't find photos of the sprayground to comment on its function or appearance. I'll update this when I get some photos of it. Otherwise, there is a very small playground area with some picnic tables nearby. The Coaster Train runs right next to this park so keep extra eyes on littles to make sure they don't head to the crossing. There is a gated ramp prior to the tracks crossing, but I don't think it's fully enclosed with a latched gated to keep kids out. Should be a fun park for train-loving kiddos otherwise.

Other Features: Basketball (1/2 Court), Permanent Restrooms, Picnic Shelter, Picnic Tables, Play Equipment, Skate Plaza, Splash pad (closed Nov. 15 through Mar. 14, for off-season shutdown period), Trail Connection, Turf Play

Hours: No hours are posted anywhere but I'm assuming it's similar to other San Marcos splash parks: Open seasonally Mar. 15 - Nov. 14 from 9am-6pm. (dates/hours subject to change, please let me know). Call to confirm before you go.

We love this splash pad and playground! It's small & simple, but the views are amazing and it feels like you're in a wooded forest. There's a picnic table shelter nearby that's reservable for parties. You can walk down the pathway towards the lake and walk, jog, stroller, bike or scoot your way around the small flat lake loop. The parking lot is small, but there's plenty of room to park on nearby streets.

This is a large fun splash pad with lots of foutain jets popping up at alternating heights. They're on a timer from when you step on the foot pad to activate it. So if you get there and it looks like they're off, just find the small metal circle foot pad just on the outside of the pad and step on it. Bathrooms with showers are nearby, along with a large grassy field, large chess, and benches. There are 3 fun playgrounds but they're a little walk up and away from where these splash pads are. There are lots of trails, paved and packed dirt, for kids to ride or scoot. Basketball courts with another large grassy area for soccer or frisbee or picnics are nearby. They have summer concerts, food trucks and a farmer's market. This park is nestled inside the Civita residential commmunity, but the park iteself is a city run public park that's open to all.

Hours: Splash pad hours can vary, but they're usually on during warmer days. Sometimes they're broken or just not turned on. Call to confirm before you go.

Cost: Free

Parking: There's a free public parking lot with a very short walk to the splash pad. If it's full, you can also park on the street, which is inside the Civita community and a short walk over.

SEAWORLD - BAY OF PLAY

500 Sea World Dr., San Diego, CA 92109

619-222-4732

$ admission

(photos via Yelp - this is an old photo since they recenlty remodeled this area Jan 2024. I'll update when I find my new photos.)

SeaWorld San Diego has a fun little splash pad inside the new Rescue Bay Splash Zone. There are 3 jet fountains that alternate spraying out water that's fun for kids to run and jump through. It's a small zone, but beware that it's next to the kids's play area and kiddie rides so kids may want to get wet when you least expect, or plan on it. Plan to bring a small towel and a change of clothes just in case.

SeaWorld San Diego is a marine theme park located on Mission Bay in San Diego, California. It's an animal-focused educational marine mammal park, oceanarium, marine animal rehabilitation center, and aquarium with lots of fun rides, roller coasters, small kids amusement rides, an arcade and a splash pad.

Hours: splash pad fountain times vary, they're usually running on warmer days

Cost: *included with admission. If you plan to go 2-3 times it's worth it to get their annual pass. The Fun Card is perfect for kids because it does not include parking. The Silver Pass is best for adults because it does include parking; which otherwise is about $35/day. DEALS: Black Friday is the best day to buy these as they usually have a Buy One Get One Free deal on these. Also, in January they usually release their "preschool passes" which are annual passes for kids aged 3-5; there's a select amount of free ones that go within the first 12 hours and afterwards they're about $25; which is a great deal.

Parking: $35/day or FREE if you have an annual pass that includes it. There's a large parking lot for general parking and they also offer an up-front premium parking for an extra charge. I say skip this and just parking in genral parking unless you're there on a busy holiday weekend and you don't want to walk across the parking lot.

- BALBOA PARK -

SAN DIEGO ZOO - CHILDREN'S BASECAMP

2920 Zoo Dr., San Diego, CA 92101

619-231-1515

$ admission

(photos are mine @famdiego)

The San Diego Zoo remodeled the Chidlren's area now called the Basecamp in 2022 and with it they added this amazing splash pad water feature inside the children's play area. There are circular pop up fountains that you can get inside the circle while water pops up all around you. There are water jets that spray across an area while steam rises up creating a fun effect to play in. There's another section with a small waterfall pouring into a little stream that great for littles to sit and splash the water around them. There is a tree with stairs built inside to go up and walk across the roped swing bridge and up to the cargo net play zone that looks down into the monkey habitat.

They designed this area very well so that it's in the back of the children's play area so you can skip it all-together and your kids won't even see if if you're not prepared for them to get wet.

Bathrooms are nearby along with a large people-dryer. The people-dryer is a paid machine $6 I think, but it's not that effective so save your money.

The Busy Bee Cafe is close-by you can get to quickly from this area for lunch, drinks and snacks.

Hours: splash pad hours are generally the same as the zoo's open hours

Cost: Included with park admission. Included with your Go San Diego Pass or San Diego City Pass. One-day passes cost $58-$72+. Annual Passes start at $74-$99+.

Parking: Free and plenty.

If you get an annual pass it includes admission to both the San Diego Zoo (at Balboa Park) and to the Safari Park (about 40 min away in Escondido). While the parking at the Zoo is free, there is a charge for parking at the Safari Park. There is an annual pass upgrdade that includes the Safari Park parking, so be sure to get that one if you will be going there often.

This is a really fun place for kids to splash around! The zero-entry wading pools are maybe 1' deep with lots of fountains shooting into the wading poools that kids can run under and through. There are two sets of these wading pools, the most popular and busiest one is right infront of the new-ish playground, snack bar and bathrooms. The underground parking garage stairs/elevator is also nearby this area. The lesser crowded wading pools are on the north side of the county building building. Just walk north and you'll see them. The large grassy field runs the entire length of both wading pools. So bring picnic blankets, pop-up shade tents, balls and frisbees to throw around and spend a few hours here.

Hours: CURRENTLY CLOSED due to repairs thru Aug. 2024.

Cost: Free + parking.

Parking: a short walk from 1. underground pay lot directly below the playground, approx. $20/day, or 2. metered street parking, you'll have to keep feeding the meters every 1-2 hours depending on the meter you park at.

Transit: The MTS Trolley stops 2 blocks away so this is the perfect way to get here, especially for kiddos who love trolley rides and splashing around. Exit the green/blue line at "Little Italy/County Center" station.

VIEJAS INTERACTIVE FOUNTAIN

5003 Willows Rd., Alpine, CA 91901

619-659-2070

(photos via Yelp)

Seasonal June-Sept. Viejas is a major destination center for the whole family to spend an entire day at and it's only 30 minutes east of San Diego. The large splash pad has pop-up fountain jets that alternate in height and colors light them up at night. I read a review that said they start a mini water show at 5:30pm and the lights turn on for a "laser show" at 8pm (this might be old info so I'll update when I can confirm, please let me know if you do).

It's at the outdoor outlet mall at Viejas that also has an arcade gaming center with virtual reality, a bowling alley and San Diego's largest outdoor roller skating rink in the warmer months (it turns into an ice skating rink in the winter). I saw an old review with a mini golf course from several years ago, but I don't think this is there anymore? I'll update this when I find out. There are lots of outlet shops and restaruants and even a day spa and hotel next door (with a casino).

Hours: Splash Pad: 12-5pm summer weekends Fri-Sun, June ? thru Sept. 2nd. (as of 6/8/24 it's not on, he said they'll post online when they start running the splash pad). Roller Skating: Mar. 29-Sept. 2, 2024 weekends only Fri-Sun from 4-9pm, also Thursdays starting Father's Day weekend.

Cost: Free, not counting the arcade, bowling alley, skating, restaurants and outlet shopping you might do while you're there ;)

SWEETWATER SUMMIT REGIONAL COUNTY PARK

3218 Summit Meadow Rd., Bonita, CA 91902

619-472-7572

$3/child, free to campers, $3/parking

(photos via Google)

Seasonal May-Oct. This is a fun splash pad with several different water activity stations spread over a large area. It's pretty quiet weekdays because it's in the southend and a paid county park, so those don't usually bring lots of crowds except for kids that might be camping there. You don't have to be a camper to use the park. You can just come here for a couple of hours to use the splash pad and hang out. I love county parks because they're paid $3 entry to park so that automatically deters most people from using them so they're pretty quiet and always clean.

Visitors to this 500-acre regional park have quite a palette of activities to choose from. Modern campsites sit at the top of the summit, along with a seasonal splash pad, play areas, a 13-station exercise course, rentable picnic areas, a community room, an outdoor amphitheater and fishing at Sweetwater Reservoir. Hikers, cyclists and equestrians will enjoy 15 miles of trails that meander up and down the hill, through open grasslands and along streamside vegetation boasting spectacular views of the reservoir and this unique urban oasis. An adjacent local park features a lawn area, tot lot, splash park and shaded picnic tables with panoramic views of the countryside.

Hours: Seasonal May-October, call for exact dates. Splash pad hours are 9:30am-sunset.

Cost: $3/child, free to campers, $3/parking

Splash Pad Rules:

  • Wristbands are $3 per child, or free for campers.

  • Wristbands are required at all times.

  • No lifeguard is on duty.

  • Children under 14 years of age must have adult supervision.

  • No running is allowed on the splash pad or in the playground area.

  • All children not potty-trained MUST wear swim diapers or plastic diaper covers when in splash pad.

  • No alcohol, glass, smoking, rubber chips, sand, skateboarding, scooters, bikes, or throwing debris in the splash pad.

  • No pets allowed in the splash pad or water areas.

  • Street shoes are prohibited in the Splash Park. Sandals, flip-flops, or appropriate deck wear is recommended.

  • Do not sit on the groundwater geysers or drains.

Seasonal. The Count's Splash Castle at Sesame Place is super fun for littles to splash around. There are some shaded and some not, lounge chairs scattered all throughout this park. They have paid lockers for extra storage and (expensive) food options. They have seasonal events and activities throughout the year.

Hours: *see website for waterpark opening dates and hours. Usually daily in the warmer months and weekends only in the cooler months.

Cost: included with park admission. Day passes atart at $60 and season passes start at $165. Kids under 3 are free and kids 3+ need a ticket.
